Road Dust Control Chemicals in Canada

Canadian cities can spend billions of dollars each year on infrastructure, but the budget may be insufficient to do all the work required, and the demand to conform to higher safety, environmental, and health protection standards increases. In some cases, there is no funding to pave all gravel roads, lanes and parking lots. This can become a problem in hot, dry weather as the small particles become stirred up by traffic, causing dust. When that is the case, municipalities often turn to dust control products on unpaved roads and paths to minimize their impact on the environment.

Dust control is critical to prevent air-borne particles from contaminating the air. Dust control products help keep dust and small particles on the road to minimize risks associated with poor visibility due to dusty conditions. Dust is not a problem when it rains or when the ground is wet, however, this is not the case when the conditions are dry. Then it becomes important to consider using road dust control chemicals. These chemicals provide lasting results and do not dry out easily, minimizing the need for frequent reapplication.

Resin modified emulsion products are a commonly used road dust control chemical in Canada. Apart from controlling dust, they also strengthen and stabilize the road. Resin modified emulsion products are a good alternative to calcium chloride when environmental sensitivity is a priority. Made from tree resin ingredients, the non-ionic, state-of-the-art emulsion technology has superior bonding strength and environmentally friendly benefits. It can be used near wetlands without risk of contamination.

High-quality, environmentally friendly road dust control chemicals in Canada should be non-corrosive and biodegradable. Therefore, they do not pose any significant risk to the environment, people, or application equipment. They contain a humectant which draws moisture from the air and aids in minimizing dust, as well as a surfactant to ensure optimum wetting characteristics.

How to Use Conveyor Belt De-icer

Frost and ice tend to form on conveyor belts during frigid winter weather. Not only will it cause delays and disruptions in your work—it may cause damage to the conveyor belt and equipment, as well. One of the most common ways to remove the ice is through direct combustion, which applies direct flame to the surface of the belt as it moves. However, using a specially formulated conveyor belt de-icer can be a better option when you want to reduce manual labour and save on energy costs. Here are some things to consider that can help you maximize the efficacy of the product:

  • Use your existing equipment – A conveyor belt de-icer does not require special machinery or equipment for application. You can use your existing equipment to spray the agent on idlers, pulleys, and belts to prevent precipitation buildup and ice glaze on critical components.

  • Choose the right de-icer - A good conveyor belt de-icer is a non-toxic, de-icing and anti-freeze compound with excellent wetting characteristics. It is non-hazardous, biodegradable, safe to handle, and compatible with belt wetting fluids that are glycol-based (i.e., propylene and ethylene glycol). Make sure it is from a reputable manufacturer that has freeze-tested the compound to ensure stability. Consider a liquid de-icer that can maintain low viscosity, even at sub zero temperatures.

  • Generate cover friction – When you apply anti-icing or de-icing products to conveyor belts, keep in mind that the objective is to make sure that there is enough cover friction to enable the belt to work efficiently, even if it needs to go through a steep climb. Belt cover friction prevents backsliding to ensure the materials being transported have a good surface for gripping.

  • Pre-treat conveyor belts for prevention – By pre-treating machinery with the conveyor belt de-icer you will ensure smoother operations. The deicer provides a layer of protection to the equipment and belt, even before the weather gets cold.

  • Apply regularly – Apply conveyor belt de-icer regularly to maintain effectiveness throughout the winter. Pre-spraying the belt, as well as continuously spraying the product on the belt will prevent it from freezing to the belt and from sticking together, thus minimizing carry-back.

Propylene Glycol and Its Various Useful Properties

Propylene glycol is a more environmentally friendly option than ethylene glycol and should be used where the possibility of contamination of waterways, vegetation or soil can occur. It can be formulated as an effective solvent or as an ingredient in deodorants, cosmetics, food, and pharmaceuticals, to maintain moisture in the products. The Material Safety Data Sheet describes propylene glycol as a colourless liquid that is more viscous than water, and with a slightly sweet flavour. Its boiling point is 188oC, and the melting point is -22oC, with a specific gravity of 1.036, making it slightly denser than water. It cannot evaporate to a significant degree, so its vapour pressure remains negligible at normal room temperature.

Propylene glycol is stable, and doesn’t decompose over time. It has low toxicity, low vapour pressure, and a low freeze point, however, it is  flammable at high temperatures. When mixed with water, propylene glycol interrupts ice formation, making it an effective antifreeze or de-icer. Water may freeze at 0oC, but adding propylene glycol in a 36 percent concentration ensures the water will remain liquid to -18oC, and more concentrated solutions will remain liquid at lower temperatures.

Propylene glycol is also used in HVAC systems and must contain corrosion inhibitors to counteract acids formed by oxidation of the glycol. Rust or corrosion of metal will decrease the life of the pipes, boilers and other equipment, making inhibitors necessary.

Industrial grade propylene glycol may be recommended where ethylene glycol is unsafe or not recommended, and where you may need to be environmentally sensitive. Many industries use it for different applications, like de-icing, anti-freeze, and hydro-testing, so it is often sold in different grades and blends. Reputable chemical distributors and suppliers can deliver propylene glycol in different methods and in any preferred storage medium, like in bulk, tote, drums, or pails to suit your application.

Propylene Glycol and Its Uses in Canadian Industries

One of the most commonly used synthetic organic compounds for a wide variety of applications is propylene glycol. Its use and safety depends on its formulation, making it versatile for use in food, beauty products, and industrial applications. For Canadian industries, propylene glycol is preferred in applications that require environmental sensitivity, and ethylene glycol may be unsafe or not ideal. Experienced and reputable chemical distributors and suppliers in Canada carry the product in different grades, delivery methods, and blends to cover every industry that may require it. Some examples include tech-grade and recycled products. It can be pre-mixed with deionized water in the correct percentage to give you the freeze protection you require. It can also have dye, or corrosion inhibitors added and is available in standard storage mediums such as bulk, pails, totes, or drums.

Propylene glycol is water soluble, non-corrosive, colourless, and hygroscopic, with a low freezing point, low toxicity, low vapour pressure, mild odour, and medium viscosity. Hence, it is typically used in Canadian industries as hydro-testing fluid, deicer, and anti-freeze. You can purchase it pre-mixed with water, or in its concentrated form, depending on your specifications. Working with the right distributor or supplier will ensure that the product will be prepared according to your specification for burst protection, freezing, or boiling.

The aviation industry in Canada relies on propylene glycol as an aircraft and runway de-icer, to increase the safety and efficiency of airports. Propylene glycol is a critical factor in sustainable wear and weather protection in coatings and paintings, and as an element for ensuring the cleanliness and quality of liquid detergents. Industrial grade propylene glycol may be used in the production of varnishes and in the manufacture of high-performance and unsaturated polyester resins for gel coats, synthetic marble castings, sheet moulding compounds, and reinforced plastic laminates, which are used for the construction of marine vessels and products. It may be used as a solvent for printer inks, a hydraulic fluid stabilizer, and as a preservative for floral arrangements.

There are many types of dust control products on the Canadian market, but not all of them are the same—and you need expert advice from a manufacturer or supplier who can advise you on the solutions you need.

Dust Suppression for Mining

In recent years environmentally friendly dust control products have been developed, including solutions for mining. Novamen’s
Nova DCP-60 is a bio-degradable, non-regulated dust control product for mining and other aggregate handling processes. The product is freeze conditioned to work in all weather conditions, including down to -30ยบ Celsius. It contains a surfactant to provide optimum water wetting characteristics as well as acting as a humectant to draw moisture from the air to aid in the reduction of dust. The product is non-corrosive and contains only low concentrations of salt compounds.

Dust Suppression for Gravel Roads

Cost effective dust control solutions that combine wetting agents with organic chemicals are great for controlling air borne dust from gravel roads. They absorb moisture from rainfall or the atmosphere to keep road surfaces damp, therefore reducing the creation of dust from moving vehicles. NovaMax DCP-C is a resin-modified emulsion product that provides a high-performance treatment solution for unpaved road surfaces. It works as a dust suppression product and provides surface stabilization for roads. Formulated from tree resin ingredients, this high quality, non-ionic emulsion technology is unique in its high bonding strength and can be used even in proximity to wetlands and other environmentally sensitive areas.

It’s important to educate yourself on your dust control needs so you can accurately communicate with your supplier. They can then provide you with dust suppression products that are suitable to your industry requirements. The best suppliers can formulate solutions that are not harmful to animal life, aquatic life, or vegetation near your application site.

Potassium Acetate – Snow and Ice Control Solution for Airport Operations

Winter, with its accompanying cold weather and freezing precipitation, can make runways slippery and dangerous for takeoff and landing. To prevent snow and ice buildup, airports apply potassium acetate on roads and walkways used by planes, vehicles, and staff. The substance is an effective deicer and a better alternative to chloride salts (i.e. magnesium chloride and calcium chloride) because it is less corrosive, making it ideal for airport runways. Likewise, it is less aggressive on soil, making it suitable for areas of environmental sensitivity. High technical grade potassium acetate is preferred for many different applications, and being in liquid form, is easier to blend and use in various concentrations.

Reputable manufacturers of potassium acetate can supply it in bulk or in easy to handle containers, like drums. The product is safe for runways and will not harm airplanes and other equipment used in airports. Unlike other deicers, potassium acetate works fast and requires minimal application. It can be applied using existing applicators or equipment, and it can remain active, even at sub-zero temperatures. Hence, it is more reliable in improving the safety of airport runways and ensuring the continuity of airport operations, even during inclement weather.

Deicers are required when manually removing snow and ice is insufficient and doesn’t expose the surface of the road or runway. Potassium acetate deicers prevent snow and other precipitation from forming ice, while breaking down existing frozen material. An effective deicer should reduce the melting point of snow and ice, and turn it into a liquid brine which will run off. Any remaining snow and ice, once the bond has melted, can be removed manually or mechanically. Potassium acetate deicers are preferred over conventional glycol-based deicers, which can make the runway slippery. It possesses superb deicing characteristics, has low biochemical oxygen demand, is urea-free, and biodegrades at low temperatures. Potassium acetate is a cost-effective deicer, with minimal environmental impact and a longer lasting effect.

Five Facts You Should Know About Road Dust Control Chemicals

Unpaved roads pose many dangers to its users, among the most prevalent being the excessive amount of dust generated by daily traffic. More than just being a major nuisance, dust clouds from unpaved roads obscure the vision of drivers, creating traffic hazards. Airborne dust can have several other potential issues. Plant pores can become clogged with dust and cause a shading effect, resulting in stunted crop growth. Livestock can also be affected, suffering from dust pneumonia, pink eye and respiratory illnesses. People living in close proximity to unpaved roads can suffer from allergies, including hay fever and respiratory issues. The fine dust particles are also abrasive, increasing wear in equipment and vehicles. Dust that gets carried into creeks, streams, and lakes increases the turbidity of the water. The proposed solution to road dust is the application of dust control chemicals and the following are important facts you should know about dust suppressants:

•    Some of the most commonly used dust suppressants in today’s market include calcium chloride, lignin derivatives, magnesium chloride, road fabric, sodium chloride, resinous adhesives, and water. Selecting the right type of chemical or suppressant to use is a matter of determining the condition of the road and the results or level of dust control desired. Dust suppressants differ in performance characteristics and finding the right chemical or product to use should depend on the condition of the road as well as the type and volume of traffic it serves.

•    Magnesium and calcium chloride, which are hygroscopic salts are some of the most commonly used chemicals for treating unpaved road surfaces. Their hygroscopic properties retard evaporation from road surfaces even during the heat of day and draw moisture from the surrounding environment. This produces brine, which keeps road surfaces moist.

•    Dust suppressants are generally diluted with water at a rate of 25-50% and applied to the surface with a sprayer. Depending on the product used, the benefits will be cumulative, requiring less product over time as the road components adhere together to form a hardened surface.

•    Lignin is a cost-effective substitute to commonly used salts and chemicals. Lignin derivatives have natural cementing properties that bind dust particles together, reducing loss of fines and aggregate.

•    In wetlands or areas of environmental sensitivity it is important to use dust suppression products that will not harm the adjacent vegetation, fish and animals. For this reason many people are turning away from calcium chloride or other chloride salts toward less damaging options, such as lignin derivatives.

Overcome the Menace of Environmental Pollution with Road Dust Control Products

We have all seen it: Trucks running up and down dirt roads, stirring up massive clouds of dust in their wake. And this dust gets everywhere—exhaust vents, critical machinery, inside vehicles, engines, in your lungs. Ultimately, dust becomes a major environmental and health problem.

This is where dust control products come in.  There are various compounds that will control dust. Some are chloride (salt) based and others are more environmentally friendly. They are applied either diluted with water or undiluted (depending on the usage and specific applications), but the basic principle behind them is simple: keep dust from being blown away.

Road dust control products keep fine dust particles clumped together by keeping the ground damp. This is achieved by using what is called a hygroscopic compound: chemical compounds that attract moisture to themselves. This moisture is absorbed from the atmosphere and keeps airborne dust particles to a minimum.

Other types of dust control products have additional compounds such as natural tree resins that act as a heavy binder. This type is used in environments where high performance dust prevention is needed and the area is environmentally sensitive as they are bio-degradable and environmentally friendly. It has the added benefit of maintaining the integrity of the road surface, as the resin forms a bond with the surface of the road and with repeated applications it increases the durability of the surface. This helps prevent ruts & potholes from forming and eliminates the need for constant grading (which stirs up even more dust in the process) and reduces road maintenance costs.

All types of road dust control products can be used for shoulder treatments, surface stabilization and erosion control and can be used on gravel roads, landing strips, haul roads, construction sites, mines and many others. If you need to control gravel in an environmentally sensitive area, or near wetlands be sure to choose a product that won’t harm surrounding vegetation and wildlife.

Benefits of Using Propylene Glycol as a Hydrotesting Fluid

Propylene glycol is a colourless and viscous liquid with nearly no odour.  Amongst its many uses, propylene glycol can prove an effective product for use in heat exchangers and hydrotesting applications. In hydrotesting, propylene glycol serves as an anti-freeze for piping systems and equipment that is useful in temperatures below -40°C. Ethylene glycol was widely used in the hydrotesting industry in the past, but many companies are now using propylene glycol because it is more environmentally friendly. Propylene glycol has medium viscosity so it is easy to apply and its toxicity and vapor pressure are lower than alternatives like ethylene glycol, making it ideal for hydrotesting.

Hydrotesting determines the strength of pressure vessels like fuel tanks, boilers, gas cylinders, pipelines, and plumbing. It is used to test for leaks and other malfunctions in the pipe or equipment. Propylene glycol is an efficient hydrotesting fluid that will keep from freezing in sub zero temperatures.

Because of the many uses and users of propylene glycol, there is also differing demand for various grades, delivery methods, and blends. Propylene glycol for hydrotesting applications can be supplied in tech grade or as a recycled product depending on the customers need. Blends of inhibitor, dye, or water in conventional storage vessels (i.e. bulk, totes, pails, and drums) are easily processed to suit any application.

Propylene glycol is hygroscopic, water soluble, and non-corrosive, making it a good choice for hydrotesting fluid. As well, it is a safe deicer for aircraft and runways and an environmentally friendly antifreeze for vehicles. It is also used for winterizing plumbing systems in structures that have been left vacant. Propylene glycol has a low freezing point comparable to ethylene glycol, but it is a safer solution and is also non-toxic.

Rydlyme – The Truly Safe and Biodegradable Descaler

Chemical descalers or descaling agents are used to eliminate lime scale from the surface of metals that are typically in contact with water. Common applications for descalers are water heaters, chillers, condensers, cooling towers and boilers. Environmental and worker safety are often prioritized when it comes to choosing a descaler, and these factors gave rise to the creation of a safe to handle and biodegradable descaler like Rydlyme. The revolutionary descaler is versatile in removing not only lime scale, but also rust and mud. It does not erode, oxidize, pit, or cause any deleterious effects on any material or metal such as steel, iron, nickel, glass, brass, or fibre. Rydlyme is designed to be safe and easy to use, and these qualities have helped make it one of the leading biodegradable descalers in the world.

When water scale, mud, rust, and lime deposits occur on equipment, particularly those that are involved in cooling and heating processes, they can greatly inhibit equipment’s efficiency and longevity, making costly repairs and shutdowns inevitable. Efficiency suffers, energy costs will increase, and the equipment’s service life is reduced. Hence, periodic cleaning with a biodegradable descaler, like Rydlyme, is highly recommended to keep those deposits at bay.

As a biodegradable descaler, Rydlyme is highly regarded among various industries, particularly pharmaceutical, poultry, bottling, beverage, and food processing plants; it is completely safe to use in food processing and drinking water systems. Advantages of Using Flocculants for Water Filtration

Flocculants are used when water has a high level of turbidity or when there are solids that must be separated from the liquid. Flocculation is a method of water filtration that is considered highly effective at minimizing the haziness of the fluid and in removing solids and colloidal material. When used together with sludge treatment, filtration of the clarified elements, and chemical feed, flocculants may be effective in filtering wastewater, too. Many industrial processes may require flocculation for water filtration and to enhance the efficiency of potable water, raw water, and process water treatment systems. Here are more advantages of using flocculants:

Dewatering – Water released in mining, municipal, and industrial dewatering systems can be more easily managed with flocculants, which will enable the production of drier cake. When there is a lot of cake solids, sludge volume is reduced to minimize disposal costs. Some flocculants are specially formulated to be effective in dewatering radioactive, biological, and inorganic sludge.

Improve small particle filtration or sedimentation – Flocculants can be used to help remove microscopic particles, which cause water to be cloudy. They can also improve the filtration process. In fact, when mere filtration becomes inefficient, flocculation is conducted to ensure success.

Supports coagulation – Flocculants may be used to promote effective and faster coagulation. Manufacturers formulate flocculants in different grades to suit every filtration or coagulation requirement.

Water soluble – High-quality flocculants will dissolve gradually in the water. Warm water and overnight soaking can make the dissolution go faster. Hence, they will not linger long in the filtered water.

Reduce energy consumption – The water filtration system can work more efficiently to reduce electrical power usage, which is typically the result of using equipment with higher throughput. As long as the flocculants are administered in the right amounts, water filtration should not use up a lot of energy resources.

Improve the performance of various systems – Flocculants can boost the effect of thickeners, settlers, clarifiers, air floatation units, drying beds, and effluent treatment plants.

Potassium Acetate De-icer – Protects Your Truck Boxes and Conveyor Systems

Winter and extremely low temperatures can cause frost, ice, or snow to form on your conveyor belt systems, truck boxes and rail cars. When that happens, you could put your processes and productivity at risk of being delayed, and lose revenue when damage occurs to your products, and when a percentage of the product remains in the rail car or truck box. For this reason, industries use de-icers that are specifically formulated for truck boxes and conveyor belt systems. De-icers were traditionally made of chloride salts, like magnesium chloride and calcium chloride, but environmentally friendly and safer alternatives, such as potassium acetate, are becoming an industry standard, especially for sensitive areas. In fact, potassium acetate de-icer is recommended for a wide range of applications, including de-icing runways, bridges, and roads.

A potassium acetate de-icer is a reliable product to ensure that no ice or frost can form in your truck boxes and conveyor belt systems. High-quality potassium acetate de-icers offer excellent anti-icing properties where they remain active, even in freezing temperatures. Discerning businesses prefer them for being a cost-effective way to keep conveyor belt systems, rail cars and truck boxes ice-free. A potassium acetate de-icer is easier to apply, even with existing equipment, and it lasts longer to minimize the need for frequent reapplications. The product diffuses through the ice and snow to break the bond between the surface and frozen precipitation. Likewise, it continues to work to prevent frozen precipitation from adhering to surfaces.

High-quality de-icers will prevent aggregates like coal and petroleum coke from freezing to conveyor belt systems, truck boxes, and rail cars, making them ideal in mining applications. Some chemical distributors and suppliers offer potassium acetate de-icers with a non-toxic and biodegradable formulation to enable aggregates to cleanly release from the sides of rail cars, hoppers, and trucks. This type of potassium acetate de-icer is blended for minimum freezing points of up to -40 degrees Celsius.

Using Paraffin Remover to Keep your Wells Clean

Paraffin refers to a waxy buildup of organic materials in oil wells and is one of the most common problems in oil production. Most crude oils contain paraffin crystals and as the oil cools, paraffin crystals form bundles. These bundles are deposited in the well bore, flow lines, pipes and tubing, and if left unattended, they turn into blockages that eventually stop the flow of oil. This problem is easily solved, but if left untreated these deposits can drastically reduce the efficiency of your oil production.

There are several methods for removing paraffin build-up, including:

•    Mechanical
•    Scraping
•    Coiled Tubing
•    Thermal
•    Hot Oiling
•    Hot Water
•    Chemical – Wax Solvents/Dispersants
•    Combination Treatments

Paraffin remover helps keep your wells clean and removes significantly more paraffin/asphaltene than traditional solvents by keeping paraffin suspended in solution longer and inhibits paraffin deposition. Chemical methods are an effective and efficient solution to paraffin removal.

Some paraffin removers require heat to be effective, which is expensive, requiring additional equipment and increased energy usage so it is preferable to find a solvent effective at low temperatures.

In applying chemicals, it is important to follow recommended safety measures. Some paraffin removers require the use of caustic reagents which can be harmful to workers and can potentially damage the equipment. Some of the solvents are toxic and hazardous to human health and the environment. Top priority should be given to using products that are safe for personnel and the environment.

How Liquid De-Icer Can Prevent Coal and Other Aggregates from Freezing

Harsh winters and cold weather can make coal and other aggregates freeze, which makes it difficult to unload. For this reason, de-icers are used to make sure that they do not freeze. De-icers come in either solid or liquid types, with the former being some of the most commonly used in the form of calcium chloride and rock salt. However, they can possibly damage concrete and vegetation when used excessively or used the wrong way. Hence, industries like mining turn to liquid de-icer as a better alternative, especially if they want to achieve quick results. Here are ways that a liquid de-icer can prevent freezing and why it is preferred:

It melts fast – Solid de-icers take time to dissolve into the brine before they can work to melt snow and ice. Liquid de-icers are already in liquid form, so they can begin melting the ice as soon as they are applied. As long as they are properly stored in a tightly sealed container, liquid de-icers remain consistent and they can retain their liquid form regardless of the temperature or the season.

It comes with excellent release properties – High-quality liquid de-icers have release properties that can let aggregates release cleanly from the side of hoppers, trucks, and conveyor belts. They are applied after loading and make unloading easier as the product is not frozen into a large block. They are specially blended to ensure a minimum freezing point of -40 degrees Celsius.

Specially formulated for coal – Some types of liquid de-icers are specifically designed to prevent aggregates like coal and petroleum coke from freezing to rail cars, conveyor systems, and truck boxes. These de-icers are versatile and are also used in airport runway applications and hydro-testing markets.

Leaves no residue – Solid de-icers typically leave a powdery or oily residue, which can be hard to clean. A liquid de-icer is not likely to leave any stubborn residue, and if it does, it can serve as an anti-icing agent, too.

Liquid Deicers – How use them effectively

Those who live in cold regions like Canada are all too familiar how freezing conditions can negatively affect production, safety, and efficiency. Deicers or freeze conditioners are used extensively in many industries in these areas to reduce wastage and improve safety. Application to railcars and conveyor belts can mitigate concerns of material freezing to them, can melt paths and roadways, and can are used almost anywhere ice buildups become an issue.

Traditional compounds use salt-based products of different concentrations to deal the freezing issue. These products however can be harsh on the environment, so finding environmentally friendly options are important to most companies in today’s world. Potassium acetate and glycerin based products are both non-harmful to vegetation and are also non-corrosive to vehicles and are becoming a first choice for many in the industry.

Over the years, Deicers have been gradually shifting towards environmentally friendly compounds with less dependence on salt and sand mixtures; products like potassium acetate and glycerin Liquid Deicers have helped counter these environmental concerns while still providing effective and safe solutions for production in the winter months.

Guidelines for safe usage:

•    Excessive application can damage the surrounding vegetation. It is advised that you use the deicer’s as per your suppliers’ instructions

•    Select effective chemicals that don’t require large quantities to provide the needed effect

•    Avoid spilling deicer on the ground and be very careful around areas of vegetation

•    It is preferable to plant shrubs and trees with higher salt tolerance so they can better withstand the harmful effects of too much salt

•    Specialized spray systems can provide an even application to railcars and conveyor belts, ensure that the correct right spray width is implemented to prevent overspray

•    When applying, ensure automation system accounts for gaps (between rail cars) and stops – if you don’t have an automated system, ensure someone monitors it closely

•    Contact your supplier for tips as to how to maximize effectiveness and safely apply your product

Advantages of Using Novasol-400 Paraffin Remover

Paraffin deposits commonly affect oil rigs and oil wells. Crude oil contains paraffin crystals that become solid after cooling. They turn into hard paraffin crystals and create several problems for the operations. It causes severe disruption in the drilling and pumping process. Paraffin often damages the equipment and narrows the oil flow passage. Initially, this problem is easily solved but later on, it can adversely affect the processes. It sometimes even blocks the pipes and tubes completely causing major disruptions. As a result, paraffin removers are an important part of the petrochemical industry.

There are several methods used to remove paraffin deposits from the walls of oil wells and other equipment. Scraping is one of them. It is highly effective during the initial stages of deposition. It involves using various tools that are designed to remove the deposits. Spraying hot water and dispersants is another technique that is frequently used.

Another highly popular and effective solution is Novasol-400. It is an all-in-one answer to  paraffin deposits and related problems. It works as a dispersant, solvent, crystal modifier, and an inhibitor. Novasol-400 is a versatile product and can be used in many situations. It is a far better option than any traditional product. It maintains the liquid form of paraffin for longer periods of time while inhibiting future deposits owing to its crystal modifying properties.

Novasol-400 contains a special blend of amines with aliphatic and aromatic compounds. Amines are responsible for the increased solvency of the product. Novasol-400 has a high saturation point - that means it can work effectively for longer periods of time. As long as the compound is present in the oil, its crystal modifier properties inhibit the deposition of paraffin and asphaltene. This results in cleaner oil wells and better efficiency in the processes.

Novasol-400 is a great product for removing paraffin and asphaltene deposits, but one should be careful while choosing such products, especially for large scale implementation. It is imperative to understand the nature of the chemical compounds that can be present in the oil and deposit. Proper research and analysis must be carried out before a decision is made.

Benefits of Using Potassium Acetate De-Icer

De-icing and anti-icing are crucial preventive measures for the smooth functioning of daily activities in the winter. People working in road safety, traffic management, import-export, airlines and travel sectors regularly rely on de-icers and anti-icers during the cold months to remove ice from the road and other surfaces.

In case of heavy snowfall or snowstorms, the snow aggregates on roads, pavement, cars, airplanes, rooftops, and runways, among others. Though the snow on rooftops does not cause much of a problem, the same cannot be said of the snow that piles up on roads, runaways, and pavement and freezes the surface. This can cause accidents while walking or driving. The risk is greater for the airline industry that needs ice-free airplane surfaces and runways before the planes can be allowed to fly. In industrial applications, the cold will freeze coal and other aggregates to the inside of the rail cars and conveyor belts that carry these products.

De-icing techniques are used in such cases to remove the ice and to prevent the coal or aggregates from freezing to the sides of the rail cars and conveyor systems. The de-icing measures include the application of various sophisticated chemicals that melt the ice or frost build up before it can impact the structure beneath. These chemicals include liquid potassium acetate, bio-based potassium acetate, glycol, glycol acetate, and sodium formate.

Among all these products, potassium acetate is one that is widely used for de-icing and anti-icing runways and airplanes. The compound has various characteristics that make it a worthwhile product for these purposes. For instance, it:

•    Can work in extreme cold sub-zero temperatures

•    Has an unlimited storage life, which makes it one of the most used de-icers around the world

•    Is not as slippery as glycols and thus, can be used on roads and runways without any worry

Works longer than chemical and traditional methods like rock salts

•    Dries quickly and make the surface ready to use in no time

•    Is non-toxic and non-hazardous, and does not harm plant and animal life

•    Is free from urea and phosphates and has a low BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand). This implies that it requires a lesser amount of biological oxygen to degrade completely

Has been approved for de-icing of runways

However, potassium acetate should be used carefully under expert supervision as it reacts violently with oxidizing agents like nitrates and chlorides. As such, it should be stored separately. Once careful attention has been given to its storage and application, potassium acetate can prove to be an extremely effective de-icer for anyone looking for such products.

Understanding the Role of Propylene Glycol Coolant in Industries

Propylene glycol (CH8O2) is a widely used antifreeze and cooling agent. It has a low freezing point and the ability to decrease freezing point of water. It provides burst protection and excellent heat transfer capabilities. Propylene glycol is widely used for making engine coolants. The reasons behind this are its low flammability and low mammalian toxicity. Further, its high boiling point and low vapor pressure make it safe and easy to use across industries.

A special quality of propylene glycol is that it preserves its flowing ability and does not rupture pipes or vessels even at freezing temperature. On an industry basis, it is primarily used as a transitional material in production of alkyd resins for paints and varnishes. It is also used in creating high performance, unsaturated resins for various end uses like:

•    Gel coatings
•    Sheet molding compounds
•    Reinforced plastic laminates used in marine construction
•    Synthetic marble castings

The compound is used for making many items including:

•    Coolants and antifreezes
•    Hydraulic and brake fluids
•    Heat transfer fluids
•    Resins
•    Paint and coatings
•    Unsaturated polyester
•    Urethanes

Propylene glycol remains one of the most widely used chemicals across the globe. For instance, it is extensively used in the cosmetics and personal care products industry. Propylene glycol enhances the appearance of the skin since it attracts water and has a viscous texture that helps it act as a moisturizer. Almost every cosmetic and lifestyle product such as bath soaps, shampoos, facial cleansers, etc. are formulated with the compound.

It is also used as a food additive as it is considered safe in marginal quantities. It is used in making beer, carbonated beverages, margarine, ice cream, dry cake mix, flavored coffees, etc. It is also used for retaining the moisture in prepared foods. In addition, it is used for flavoring and for food coloring ingredients. It is also used as an inactive ingredient in many drugs, including oral, parenteral and topical formulations. It is additionally used as a stabilizer for the vitamins.
