1,2-Ethanediol is a systemic agent which is more commonly known as  Ethylene Glycol. It has no odour and is colourless when in room temperature and may change to yellow green when used as an anti-freeze in automotive parts. This type of chemical can be found everywhere due to its wide industrial and commercial use. Like most other chemical substances, too much Ethylene Glycol can be fatal to humans and the environment.

Where can we find Ethylene Glycol?

Ethylene Glycol can be found everywhere. It is one of the substances used as a raw material in making things that people use on a daily basis. We can find this substance from bottles to pillows, clothes to carpets, and all sorts of upholstery. Even in automobiles, Ethylene Glycol is used as a coolant to prevent over heating of the car’s engine.

What happens after its ingestion?

When you accidentally swallow Ethylene Glycol, it is fast absorbed by your body. Its by-products immediately turn into toxic compounds which attack the Central Nervous System of the brain. If its ingestion is not treated fast, the results can be very fatal and may even lead to death. Ethanol and Fomepizole are neutralizers that may help fight against Ethylene Glycol toxicity.
